🩹 Dive first aid (quick guide)

Not a substitute for trained medical care. Call emergency services immediately.

Decompression Illness (DCI) / Bends

  1. Lay the diver flat on their back (or recovery position if unconscious).
  2. Administer 100% oxygen via demand valve if available — continuously.
  3. Keep the diver warm, calm, and still. Do NOT recompress in-water.
  4. Give fluids if conscious and alert (water, no alcohol/caffeine).
  5. Call DAN and arrange urgent evacuation to a recompression chamber.

Drowning / Unresponsive Diver

  1. Remove from water safely. Call emergency services.
  2. Check airway, breathing, circulation. Start CPR if not breathing (30:2).
  3. Use AED as soon as available.
  4. Provide 100% oxygen if breathing returns.

Lung Over-expansion / Arterial Gas Embolism

  1. Lay flat, administer 100% oxygen.
  2. Treat as DCI — urgent recompression therapy required.
  3. Monitor airway and consciousness; CPR if needed.

Marine envenomation (stings)

  1. Remove diver from water. Restrict movement of affected limb.
  2. Jellyfish: rinse with vinegar (not freshwater). Remove tentacles with tweezers.
  3. Stingray / lionfish / stonefish: immerse wound in hot water (45°C / 113°F) for 30–90 min.
  4. Monitor for allergic reaction. Seek medical help.

Hypothermia

  1. Remove wet exposure suit. Dry and insulate the diver.
  2. Warm gradually — core first (torso). Avoid rubbing limbs.
  3. Warm sweet drinks if fully conscious. Seek medical attention.
